    Board the 18:30 northbound at Union - the Northlander runs once a day, so be on the platform by 18:00. Coffee + croissant from the food court while you wait.

  2. Gravenhurst

    Gravenhurst

    Muskoka

    Pull in at 20:45. The lake is dark by then but the Muskoka air is the point. Walk to the inn, late dinner across the wharf, the RMS Segwun lit up beside the dock. Full day in town the next morning before the 20:45 train rolls through again.

    North Bay

    Lake Nipissing

    Arrive 23:30 - straight to bed at the B&B. Up before dawn for the 05:55 southbound back to Union. Two nights, two stops, one evening service that does both.

What the trip felt like, in three notes

  • Gravenhurst

    Lakeside dinner at the Boathouse

    The waiter pointed out the Segwun coming back in across the wharf. Felt like we had landed in 1925.

  • North Bay

    Half-hour by the lake before dawn

    Walked the boardwalk to the station with one heron and the lake fog for company. Caught the 05:55 south on time.

  • Toronto Union

    Back at Union by lunch

    Train was on time both ways. We would do this again next September.
